Workshop: Writing with Intention

You know that you want to write about something but, each time you start, you feel overwhelmed and stuck.

Each datapoint, each memory, each argument seems to call for ten new paragraphs, or ten new pages. When every part of a story or idea feels critical, how do you identify what’s really at the core? How do you determine what you really mean to say?

In this four-week workshop, you will explore your motivations for writing, and use those motivations to focus your project. What draws you to this topic or story? Why is it important that you write about it now? How can your voice add something novel, surprising, or critical to an ongoing conversation—or start a new conversation altogether?

This workshop is open to writers of various sorts:

  • creative nonfiction writers
  • memoirists and essayists
  • academics writing for general audiences
  • artists who incorporate text into their practice

Aspiring writers are welcome!

As a group, we will look at works of nonfiction which reveal or conceal the writer’s motivations. Using these texts as inspiration, each participant will create and revise text on a topic of their choosing. By the end, you will have a strong first draft, a clear and concise outline, and / or a ready-to-send pitch.

When: Saturdays May 3, May 10, May 17, and May 24, from 1:00-3:00 PM.
Where: TBA. If participants are local to Pittsburgh, we will meet in-person. Otherwise, a Zoom / hybrid arrangement will be made.
How Much: $50 per participant.
Extra Info: This is the first iteration of this workshop, so it is being offered at half-price. Participants will be asked to complete short feedback questionnaires to help improve the workshop. Participants may also be asked to write short (one paragraph max.) summaries of their experiences.
